Every bedroom has that one awkward corner. Maybe it's a narrow gap between the window and the door, or perhaps you inherited a room where the floor plan seems determined to work against you. I've walked through thousands of bedrooms over the years — both as a designer and as someone who's struggled to fit a wardrobe into spaces that barely make sense — and one truth keeps repeating itself: the problem is rarely the room. It's the measurement.

Get your numbers right, and even a cramped bedroom can hold a wardrobe that feels generous. Get them wrong, and you'll be left with doors that won't close, drawers that jam, or a unit that eats half your floor space. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about sizing, measuring, and planning your wardrobe with confidence.

Starting with the Basics: What You Actually Need to Measure

Before you browse a single catalogue or request a quote, you need to pull out a tape measure and start with the raw data. Most people skip this step or do it carelessly, and that's where things fall apart.

Measure the full width of the wall where the wardrobe will sit, from corner to corner. Don't trust the builder's dimensions — actual walls vary, and skirting boards often peek out by a centimetre or two. If there are radiators, light switches, or power points along that wall, note their exact position and height. A wardrobe looks unprofessional when it's built around nothing, only for a switch socket to end up buried somewhere in the middle panel.

Next, measure the ceiling height. Not from a drawing — physically. Mark the floor at the point where the wardrobe will stand and measure straight up. In older apartments, you'll often find the ceiling slopes slightly or the floor isn't level. A difference of even two centimetres between the left and right sides can cause a wardrobe to look tilted or leave an awkward gap at the top.

Don't forget the depth dimension either. Standard wardrobe depth is 60cm, but that's not always right for every room. If your bedroom is under 10 square metres, a full 60cm might consume too much walking space. I've fitted wardrobes at 50cm depth in tight rooms, and it works beautifully — you just orient the hanging rails perpendicular to the front so clothes still hang properly without crowding the opening.

Interior Layout: How to Divide Your Space for Maximum Function

Numbers on the outside tell you what will fit. Numbers on the inside tell you what you'll actually use. This is where most wardrobes fail — they look good from the hallway but are useless once you try to organise them.

A well-designed wardrobe interior breaks down into roughly three zones: hanging space, shelf space, and drawer space. For a standard double wardrobe that's 180cm wide, here's how I'd typically split it:

Hanging space should take up about 60% of the interior width. That means two hanging sections of roughly 85cm each if you're doing a double wardrobe. Men's long coats and dresses need a minimum hanging height of 140cm from the rail to the shelf below. Women's shirts and blouses need about 100cm. If you're mixing both, set the rail at 140cm and you cover everyone. Shorter rails at 80cm work well for trousers folded over a rail or stacked jeans.

Shelf space sits above the hanging area. Each shelf should be a minimum of 30cm deep and placed no higher than 200cm from the floor for easy access. Anything above that becomes a permanent storage zone for seasonal items you only pull out twice a year.

Storage Tips

Drawer space belongs at the bottom. A standard drawer stack of four units, each 15cm high, gives you 60cm of vertical drawer space — enough for folded garments, underwear, and accessories. Make sure there's at least 5cm of clearance below the lowest drawer so it slides out smoothly without hitting the floor.

For a sliding-door wardrobe, remember that the sliding mechanism takes up about 10cm of interior depth on each side. If your wardrobe is exactly 60cm deep, your usable interior depth becomes closer to 50cm. This is why sliding door wardrobes sometimes feel tighter inside than hinged-door units of the same external measurement.

Sliding vs. Hinged Doors: Why the Choice Changes Everything

The type of door you choose doesn't just affect aesthetics — it fundamentally changes how you measure and plan the space around your wardrobe.

Sliding doors are the go-to for smaller bedrooms. They don't require any clearance in front to open, which means you can place a wardrobe against a wall with as little as 60cm of walking space in front of it and still use it comfortably. However, sliding doors have a trade-off: you only get access to half the wardrobe at a time. When one door is slid open, the other panel is blocking the second half entirely.

If you go with sliding doors, make sure your interior layout accounts for this. Place your most frequently used items in the section that opens freely, and keep seasonal or less-accessed items behind the permanently closed panel. I've seen too many wardrobes where the busiest shelf — the one with everyday shirts and trousers — is trapped behind a door that never moves because someone chose to store spare linens in the accessible section instead.

Hinged doors, by contrast, open fully and give you complete access to the entire interior. The catch? They need clearance. A standard hinged door needs about 90cm of space in front of it to open fully without hitting furniture or walls. If your bedroom is narrow, that 90cm might eat up your entire walking path. In those cases, consider half-hinge doors or bi-fold options, which need less swing space while still offering better access than sliders.

Regardless of door type, always leave at least 2cm of gap on each side and 1cm at the top when measuring the opening. Wood and engineered materials expand and contract with humidity, and a perfectly snug fit on day one can become a jammed door by month three.

Material Matters: How Construction Affects Your Measurements

The material your wardrobe is made from influences both its dimensions and how it ages. This is a detail most buyers overlook until it's too late.

Solid wood wardrobes tend to be more forgiving in terms of tolerances because the material is stable and strong. A 60mm thick solid wood panel can span a larger distance without sagging, which means wider shelves are possible without support brackets. However, solid wood is also heavier and more expensive, and it can shift with seasonal humidity changes.

Engineered wood — specifically high-density fibreboard (HDF) or medium-density fibreboard (MDF) with a laminate or veneer finish — is the workhorse of modern wardrobes. Panels are typically 18mm thick for vertical dividers and 18–25mm for shelves, depending on span. An 18mm shelf spanning more than 80cm will begin to sag under even moderate load unless you add a centre support or use a thicker panel. This is a critical measurement consideration: if you want wide, uninterrupted shelves, specify 25mm panels or plan for internal supports.

Storage Tips

The internal hardware also has spatial implications. Drawer runners, especially soft-close ball-bearing slides, need approximately 50mm of clearance on each side of the drawer box. Shutter hinges need about 35mm of overlap on the frame. These may sound like small details, but they add up quickly when you're designing a wardrobe to the millimetre.

A wardrobe that's 180cm wide on paper might internally be only 170cm of usable space once you account for panel thickness, frame depth, and hardware clearance. Final Checks Before You Commit: A Measurement Checklist

Before you sign off on any wardrobe order, run through this checklist to catch the details that make the difference between a unit that works and one that frustrates you daily.

Wall flatness: Run a straight edge along the wall where the wardrobe will sit. Any bow or dip greater than 5mm over a 2-metre span will leave visible gaps between the wardrobe and the wall. Flag this with your supplier — most custom units can be adjusted with shims or trim to compensate.

Skirting boards: Measure the height of your skirting boards. A standard skirting is 70–100mm high. If your wardrobe sits flush against a wall with skirting, you'll need either a rebate cut into the back panel or sufficient rear clearance. Floor level: Check whether the floor is level across the wardrobe's footprint. A slope of more than 3mm across the width will cause drawers to slide shut or open on their own. Some suppliers offer adjustable feet to compensate, but it's worth confirming this is included.

Ceiling condition: For floor-to-ceiling wardrobes, the gap between the top of the unit and the ceiling should be no more than 5mm for a clean look. If your ceiling has texture, cornices, or uneven plaster, factor that into your measurement — you may need a filler strip or a custom scribe cut at the top.

Door swing or slide path:
