So you bought the wardrobe. Maybe it arrived in a cardboard coffin that looked bigger than your bedroom floor. Maybe the instructions came with illustrations that might as well have been abstract art. You're staring at a pile of cam locks, dowels, and particleboard panels like they're going to magically form a functional storage system. They won't. But here's what will: a systematic approach that accounts for your actual room, your actual habits, and the fact that nobody ever tells you to measure the doorway your wardrobe needs to pass through first.

Let's fix that.

Planning Around the Opening, Not Just the Wall

Before you unpack a single panel, you need answers to three questions that most assembly videos completely skip. Can the wardrobe actually fit through your door? Will the sliding doors have enough clearance to open fully? And does your floor level out at the right height, or will your wardrobe sit at a slight tilt that throws off the track?

Grab a tape measure and measure the width, height, and depth of every doorway your wardrobe needs to traverse — front door, hallways, bedroom door. Then add 3 cm to each dimension for maneuvering room. If your wardrobe's outer packaging is 210 cm tall and your bedroom door is 200 cm, you're either tilting it through at an angle you don't have the strength for, or you're taking the wardrobe apart at the threshold and putting it back together inside your room. Both options are miserable.

Next, check your floor. Place a spirit level against the wall where the wardrobe will sit. If the floor slopes more than 5 mm across the wardrobe's depth, your units won't align properly when assembled. Most flat-pack wardrobes come with adjustable feet or shims — use them. But knowing about the slope before assembly saves you from discovering it three hours later, when all your panels are up and nothing closes flush.

The worst thing that can go wrong isn't a misplaced screw — it's realizing after full assembly that your wardrobe's double doors only open 15 cm because a radiator or wall socket is in the way.

Choosing Sliding vs. Swing Doors — and Getting the Hardware Right

This decision affects your entire wardrobe strategy. Swing doors need clearance space equal to the door width in front of the unit. A 60 cm door demands 60 cm of floor space. Sliding doors need none of that — they glide parallel to the wall. But they introduce their own compromises: you lose about 8 cm of usable interior width per door because of the overlapping track system, and accessing items behind the sliding panel requires pulling the door fully aside rather than opening it wide.

For rooms under 10 sqm, sliding doors are almost always the better call. For master bedrooms with 15 sqm or more, swing doors create a more satisfying experience — the full reveal, the natural airflow, the sense of entering a proper walk-in space.

The hardware matters more than the aesthetic. Cheaper wardrobes use plastic滚轮 (rolling wheels) that degrade within two years, especially in humid climates. Look for steel bearings or at minimum reinforced nylon wheels with metal axles. If you're assembling a MIDHILL unit, you'll notice the sliding track uses a dual-rail system — one rail for the wheels, a secondary guide rail at the top to prevent lateral wobble. That top rail is non-negotiable for any wardrobe wider than 120 cm; without it, the door will sway and eventually derail.

When Installing Track

When installing the track, use a laser level or a long spirit level. A track that's out of level by even 2 mm across a 200 cm span will cause the door to drift toward one side over time. The wheels will wear unevenly, and you'll be fighting the door every time you open it.

Material Choices That Survive Real Life

Particle board, MDF, plywood, solid wood — each has a personality, and each personality responds differently to your environment.

Particle board is the default for most flat-pack wardrobes. It's stable, affordable, and won't warp — if you keep it dry. The weakness is edge swelling. When humidity hits 70%+, the exposed edges of particle board absorb moisture and expand. This is why you seal every cut edge during assembly. Even the holes for shelf pins should get a thin coat of edge banding adhesive or clear sealant. A wardrobe that starts as a functional unit can end up with swollen doors that won't close properly if you skip this step.

MDF is denser and smoother than particle board, which makes it better for painted finishes. But it's heavier and equally vulnerable to water damage. In Singapore's climate, MDF wardrobes need active dehumidification or at minimum consistent air circulation.

Plywood is the sweet spot for those who want durability without the price of solid hardwood. Six-ply birch or Okoumé plywood holds screws better than either particle board or MDF, resists warping reasonably well, and takes paint or veneer beautifully. If you're choosing between a MIDHILL option and a generic brand, the plywood-core version will outlast the particle board version by years, especially in tropical conditions.

Solid wood is beautiful but demanding. It expands and contracts with seasonal humidity changes. A wardrobe built from solid teak in a humidity fluctuating between 60% and 85% will season — and season means potential joint movement, occasional sticking of drawers, and the need for periodic adjustment. That's not a flaw; it's just the material talking to you. Pay attention, or your wardrobe will talk back by developing gaps at the corners.

The Assembly Sequence That Actually Works

Most people assemble wardrobes in the order the manual suggests: build the frame, attach the doors, install shelves, repeat. This is wrong for anything larger than a small bedside unit. Here's the sequence that professional installers actually use:

Phase 1 — Base construction. Assemble the bottom frame on its side, not on its back. Screwing from the top side gives you better leverage and accuracy. Install the adjustable feet at this stage while the frame is accessible from above. Measure diagonals — both should be within 3 mm of each other. If they're not, your frame is racked (square is compromised), and everything built on top of it will inherit that misalignment.

Phase 2 — Upright panels. With the base square, stand the side panels upright and secure them. Use a combination square to verify that each panel is perpendicular to the base at both the front and back edges. A panel that's 2 mm out of plumb over 220 cm height creates a visible gap at the top when the wardrobe is complete.

Storage Solutions

Phase 3 — Back panel. This is the most skipped step. The back panel (usually thin hardboard) isn't decorative — it's structural bracing. It prevents the wardrobe from racking sideways under load. Secure it with the provided nails or staples, but check that the frame remains square after attachment. The tension from nailing the back panel can pull a slightly out-of-square frame into compensation.

Phase 4 — Internal fittings. Install shelf pins, drawer slides, and hanging rails before the wardrobe is fully upright and positioned. Working on a horizontal surface is easier and more accurate. Drawer slides, in particular, need to be perfectly level on both sides — a 1 mm height difference between left and right slides will cause drawers to bind.

Phase 5 — Door installation. Only now do you hang the doors or attach the sliding mechanism. Check clearance at top, bottom, and sides. Doors should have 2-3 mm gaps on all sides — enough to prevent binding, minimal enough to look intentional.

Phase 6 — Final positioning and leveling. Move the wardrobe into place. Adjust the feet until the unit is level and plumb. Re-check door alignment after adjustment. The final step is often skipped: anchor the wardrobe to the wall if it's over 180 cm tall. Tip-over risk is real, and wall anchoring takes five minutes with the provided hardware.

Organization Systems That Match Your Actual Stuff

A wardrobe is useless if the internal layout doesn't match how you actually live. Before you buy dividers, drawers, or shelving inserts, take inventory. Not a vague mental estimate — physically count and measure.

How many long coats do you own? How many shirts hang versus fold? What's the tallest item you need to store — a maxi dress, a folded comforter, a vacuum-sealed bag? These measurements determine your internal configuration.
