It holds everything you own that doesn't live in drawers or on shelves. And yet, most people treat the door mechanism as an afterthought—picking whatever style the showroom has in stock, then spending years regretting the clearance space they didn't account for.

The Clearance Question: What Your Floor Plan Actually Needs

The single biggest mistake I see in bedroom layouts isn't about style—it's about the invisible footprint a wardrobe demands before you even consider what goes inside it.

A hinged door opens outward in a quarter-circle arc. A standard 60 cm wide door needs roughly 60 cm of clear floor space in front of it to swing open fully. If your bedside table is 45 cm deep and sits 10 cm from the wardrobe, you've already blocked a third of that swing before you've even tried to reach the clothes in the middle section. When comparing across materials, don't just look at the door face. Examine the edge treatment, the frame thickness, and the hardware ratings. A beautifully veneered door mounted on flimsy 0.8 mm aluminium tracks will sag within two years. Look for tracks rated for at least 50 kg per panel.

Interior Layout: Where Your Storage Actually Lives

A wardrobe's exterior is merely packaging. The interior layout determines whether you'll actually use every centimetre of space. This is where most pre-fabricated units fail—and where custom planning pays enormous dividends.

Consider the vertical zones. The top shelf, positioned between 190 cm and 220 cm from the floor, is ideal for seasonal storage—winter coats, holiday decorations, spare linens. The mid-zone between 120 cm and 190 cm is your daily-access territory and should be predominantly hanging space. The lower zone below 120 cm works best for folded garments, drawers, or shoes. At 60 cm, you gain a comfortable buffer. This is the sweet spot for most residential wardrobes, providing enough room for full-length garments without consuming excessive floor space. A 60 cm deep wardrobe at 220 cm height and 180 cm width offers roughly 756 litres of internal volume—a realistic target for a two-person bedroom.

Depth beyond 65 cm rarely adds practical value. You're paying for space you can't effectively access, particularly with sliding doors where the back panel becomes increasingly unreachable. If you need more storage than a standard-depth wardrobe provides, consider increasing the width rather than the depth. A 240 cm wide by 60 cm deep wardrobe holds more than a 180 cm wide by 75 cm deep one, and every compartment remains accessible.

Height is another overlooked dimension. Standard ceiling height in most homes is 240 cm. A wardrobe that reaches within 2 cm of the ceiling eliminates the dust-collecting gap above the unit and maximises storage volume. Some premium configurations include a narrow top compartment accessed via a retractable ladder or a high pull-down rail, turning that final 20 cm into genuine utility rather than a shelf for cardboard boxes you'll never retrieve.

Width planning follows a similar logic of modularity. Designing around standard module widths—typically 40, 50, 60, or 80 cm—ensures that shelving, drawer inserts, and hanging rails fit standard hardware. A 150 cm wide wardrobe might be configured as three 50 cm modules: one with double hanging, one with shelves and drawers, and one dedicated to shirts on slim hangers. Making the Decision: A Practical Framework

If your bedroom is narrow or your wardrobe spans a corner, sliding doors are almost certainly the right call. The clearance savings alone justify the choice, and modern two-panel systems with soft-close mechanisms have largely eliminated the jarring noise and stickiness that characterised older installations.

If you prioritise visibility, ventilation, and the satisfaction of a fully opened wardrobe, hinged doors deliver an experience that sliding systems simply cannot match. Opening both doors simultaneously reveals everything at once—the complete contents of your wardrobe laid bare. This psychological benefit is underestimated; it reduces decision fatigue each morning because you can scan your entire collection in a single glance.

Material choice should be driven by climate and usage intensity. In humid environments, engineered wood with proper edge sealing often outperforms solid wood, which can swell and bind in
